The world of marketing and advertising is changing. Traditional advertising is becoming less effective and it is being replaced with content marketing.

What is Content Marketing?

You have probably heard the phrase ‘content marketing’ a lot if you have a business or if you are in the marketing world, but what is it really? Content marketing is defined as “a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

Why is Content Marketing Important?

Well, to explain, we should first take a look at the world we live in. We live in a world that bombards us with information and advertisements every day. Sometimes it can all be too much because we are seeing things we don’t actually care about. We are at the point where people actively avoid advertisements. People have DVR’s to record their TV shows and fast-forward through advertising, many YouTube videos allow you to skip advertisements after watching them for a few seconds and companies like Spotify get consumers to pay in order to have commercial free music. We are now living in a world where people pay money to avoid your company’s advertisements. Now before you get too freaked out, know that there is a better way of advertising. This is where content marketing comes in. If you go back up to the definition above, there are two words you should pay close attention to: valuable and relevant. Simply put, content marketing is creating content that is valuable and relevant to consumers. The idea behind this type of marketing is giving people information they will enjoy. If you entertain or enlighten them, you are likely to make them customers. Entertain people with a story, or give them some factual information they need with an article or blog post, and then they will seek out your company and your content. Content marketing is important to add to your marketing strategy because it is the marketing of the present and of the future. Today, people consume the information they want and avoid everything else; with content marketing, you can make your information something people actually want to consume.
